SSS salary loan: how much you can borrow and how to apply

By MoneyNow editorial deskEvery rate on this page is taken from the issuing authority — SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG, the BIR, the NWPC or the SEC — and carries the date it took effect. Where a figure cannot be sourced we say so rather than estimate.

How much you can borrow

The SSS salary loan comes in two sizes. A one-month loan is the average of your latest twelve posted Monthly Salary Credits, or the amount you applied for, whichever is lower. A two-month loan is double that average, rounded to the next higher monthly salary credit.

Because the loan is built on your MSC rather than your take-home pay, the ceiling follows the contribution table. With the MSC ceiling at ₱35,000, the largest possible two-month loan is ₱70,000 — and you only reach it if you have been contributing at the maximum bracket for the last twelve months. The brackets are in our 2026 SSS contribution table.

Who qualifies

For a one-month loan you need 36 posted monthly contributions, six of them within the last twelve months before the month you apply. For a two-month loan the requirement rises to 72 posted contributions, with the same six-in-twelve recency rule. You must be under 65, and if you are employed, your employer must be current on contribution and loan remittances — a delinquent employer blocks your application even when your own record is clean.

What it costs

Interest is 10% per annum on the diminishing principal balance, plus a one-time service fee of 1% of the loan amount deducted before release. Repayment runs over 24 monthly amortizations. A missed amortization draws a 1% per month penalty on the unpaid amount, so the loan is cheap only while it is current.

Ten percent a year against a private online loan priced near the SEC ceiling is not a close comparison — the SSS loan is roughly an order of magnitude cheaper. The catch is the eligibility wall and the cap tied to your MSC. If you need more than your record allows, or you cannot clear the contribution count, compare the regulated private options on our salary loan page before touching anything unlicensed.

How to apply

Applications go through the My.SSS member portal or the SSS mobile app; employed members apply online and the employer confirms through its own My.SSS account. Proceeds are released to your UMID-ATM card or an enrolled bank account through the disbursement channels in your portal profile. Processing is usually measured in days once the employer certification is in.

Renewal

The loan is renewable once at least half of the original principal has been paid and half of the term has lapsed. On renewal, any remaining balance plus accrued interest and penalties is deducted from the new proceeds, so a renewal never doubles your cash in hand.

Check your status

Loan balance, amortization schedule and posting of payments all show in My.SSS under the loans tab. If a salary deduction has not posted after a couple of months, raise it with HR first — unremitted deductions are an employer violation, and the SSS can run after the employer for them.

A worked example

Say your last twelve MSCs were all ₱20,000. One-month loan: ₱20,000. Two-month loan: ₱40,000. Service fee at 1% takes ₱400 off the two-month release, so ₱39,600 lands. Over 24 months at 10% per annum diminishing, the amortization is roughly ₱1,846 a month and total interest comes to about ₱4,300 — around 11% of the principal across two years. The same ₱40,000 from an online lender priced at the SEC ceiling costs more than that per month at the start of the term, which is the entire argument for exhausting this loan first.

If you had a past-due SSS loan

An old defaulted salary loan does not disappear — penalties keep accruing and the balance is deducted from future benefits. The SSS periodically runs condonation programs that waive accumulated penalties on restructured loans; if you are carrying an old one, check whether a program is open before paying penalties in full, and settle the principal either way, because an unpaid salary loan blocks a new one.
