SSS ID requirements: getting the UMID card

By MoneyNow editorial deskEvery rate on this page is taken from the issuing authority — SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG, the BIR, the NWPC or the SEC — and carries the date it took effect. Where a figure cannot be sourced we say so rather than estimate.

What the SSS ID is now

The classic blue SSS ID is gone; what the SSS issues today is the UMID card — the Unified Multi-Purpose ID shared with GSIS, PhilHealth and Pag-IBIG. It carries your photo, signature, biometrics and a Common Reference Number, and it sits in the primary ID tier for banks, lenders, government offices and notaries. For anyone who lacks a passport or driver’s license, it is the cheapest primary ID to obtain — the first card is free.

Who can apply

Two conditions: you must have at least one posted SSS contribution, and you must not have been issued a UMID before. A brand-new member whose first contribution has not posted yet gets rejected at the counter — check your posting in My.SSS first.

Documents to bring

  • Accomplished UMID Card Application Form (downloadable, or filled at the branch)
  • One primary ID: passport, driver’s license or PRC card
  • No primary ID? Two secondary documents, one of them your PSA birth certificate, paired with another accepted ID or record bearing your name and date of birth

Names must match across documents. A mismatch — a maiden name here, a married name there — is the most common reason applications bounce; fix the SSS record first through a member data change request.

The process

  1. Go to an SSS branch with UMID enrollment facilities (not all branches capture biometrics — check before traveling)
  2. Submit the form and IDs, then have photo, fingerprints and signature captured
  3. Wait for delivery or pickup advice — production takes several weeks to a few months depending on volume

Replacement of a lost card is the same flow plus a ₱200 fee.

The UMID as a bank card

The current issuance is the UMID Pay Card variant with a built-in bank account feature. It matters for borrowers: SSS releases salary loan proceeds and benefits straight to it, which is the fastest disbursement channel the SSS has.

Why lenders care

Every loan application in our comparisons starts with identity, and a primary government ID clears verification in one step where secondary IDs trigger manual review. If a UMID is your only primary ID option, the one posted contribution it requires is worth making for that reason alone — identity friction is a real cause of rejected or delayed online loan applications.

While you wait for the card

UMID production is the slow part, and loan applications do not have to wait for it. Your SS number works for SSS transactions the moment your record exists, and private lenders accept other primary IDs meanwhile. If the UMID is your only path to a primary ID, ask the branch for the stamped application acknowledgment — some institutions accept it as supporting evidence of pending government ID issuance, though not as the ID itself.
