How to apply for a loan online in the Philippines

By MoneyNow editorial deskEvery rate on this page is taken from the issuing authority — SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG, the BIR, the NWPC or the SEC — and carries the date it took effect. Where a figure cannot be sourced we say so rather than estimate.

Decide who you are applying to before you apply

Applying for a loan online in the Philippines takes about ten minutes. The part that takes longer, and the part that decides whether you regret it, happens before you open the form: finding out whether the name on the app is a direct lender that holds an SEC Certificate of Authority and lends its own money, or a marketplace that forwards your details to lenders you have not chosen. Both are legal. They are different products. A direct lender such as MoneyCat or Finbro assesses you once and holds the loan itself; a marketplace such as CashSpace reaches several lenders from one form, which is useful after a decline and costly in the number of companies that end up holding your data.

Whichever you pick, run the registration check first. It takes three minutes and the steps are in how to check whether a loan app is actually registered. Do not skip it because the app has a lot of downloads — counterfeit apps using a licensed lender’s name have had a lot of downloads too.

What to have ready

  • One primary government ID with your photo. The app will photograph it and then photograph you, so have the physical card, not a photocopy.
  • A mobile number registered in your own name. The one-time password goes there, and a number in someone else’s name fails the match.
  • Somewhere to receive the money — a GCash or Maya wallet or a bank account, again in your own name. GCash or Maya for loans covers which one to give.
  • An idea of your income. Most app lenders ask you to declare it rather than prove it. A bank will want payslips or an ITR whether the application is online or not.

The application, step by step

  1. Install from the developer the SEC records, not from a link someone sent you. The developer name on the store listing should be the licensed company — SOFI Financing for Finbro, MoneyCat Financing for MoneyCat. If it is anything else, stop.
  2. Read the permission requests. Camera, yes: that is how your ID is verified. Location is common. Contacts and photo gallery are not needed to lend you money, and granting them is what makes the debt-shaming this market has a history of technically possible. Refuse, or pick a lender that does not ask.
  3. Register and verify. Mobile number, one-time password, ID capture, selfie. Name mismatches between ID, SIM and wallet are the usual reason this step fails.
  4. Fill in the application. Amount, term, purpose, employment, income, address. Answer honestly; a declaration that does not survive a later check is grounds for a decline or a demand for immediate repayment.
  5. Read the offer, not the advertisement. You will be shown an amount, a term, and — if the lender is doing its job — a disclosure statement with the total you will repay in pesos. The Truth in Lending Act requires that statement before you are bound. If all you can find is a daily rate, you do not yet know the price.
  6. Accept, and wait for disbursement. App lenders commonly pay out within minutes to 24 hours, to the wallet or account you registered. First loans are small — a few thousand pesos is normal — and the limit grows with repayment history.

What to read before you tap accept

Three numbers and one date. The total repayable in pesos, which is the only honest price. The repayment schedule — one payment at the end, or instalments, and on which dates. The penalty for paying late, which for a covered small loan cannot exceed 5% a month on the overdue amount since April 2026. And the date the first payment falls due, because a due date before your payday is a late fee waiting to happen.

Then put the quoted figures through the loan calculator. It turns the pesos you were quoted into an effective monthly rate and says whether the loan sits inside the SEC ceiling at all. Loans up to ₱10,000 over four months or less are capped at 12% a month effective; larger or longer loans are not, which is why many products are structured just past those lines.

If you are declined

A decline from one direct lender is a decision about one set of eligibility rules, not a verdict on you. Before applying to five more apps in an afternoon — each application is a data-sharing event and some lenders report enquiries — read loans for bad credit for what a decline usually means and what to change, or use one marketplace application to reach several lenders at once.

After the money lands

Screenshot the disclosure statement and the schedule, set a reminder two days before the due date, and work out now how you will pay — how to pay an online loan covers GCash, Maya, Cebuana, M Lhuillier and the bank routes. If the loan is the first of several you are planning, read online loans with long-term payment first: a longer term lowers the monthly figure and raises the total, and it also takes the loan outside the capped bracket.

Questions people ask

Can I apply for a loan online without a payslip?

Usually, yes. Most SEC-recorded online lenders ask for one government ID, a mobile number in your own name and an account to receive the money, and assess income from what you declare rather than from payslips. Banks are the exception: an online bank loan application still needs payslips or an ITR.

How long does online loan approval take?

Anywhere from a few minutes to about 24 hours for app lenders, depending on how quickly your ID verifies. Marketplaces add a step, because they forward your application to partner lenders who each decide separately.

Can I apply for a bank loan online?

Most large banks take personal loan applications through their websites or apps, but the documentation is the same as at a branch and approval takes days rather than minutes. Bank loans also sit outside the SEC interest rate ceiling, because banks answer to the Bangko Sentral.

What ID is accepted for an online loan?

Any primary government-issued ID with your photo — passport, driver's licence, UMID, PhilSys national ID, PRC licence, postal ID. The name on the ID must match the name on the mobile number and the e-wallet or bank account, or the application stalls at verification.
